Built during Vancouver's golden era, the original structure served as a private residence for shipping magnate Theodore Veil. The architecture reflected his travels - marble from Italy, woodwork from England, and that grand staircase everyone still photographs today.
The Veil family converted their home into a boutique hotel. Post-war Vancouver was booming, and they wanted to share their space with the world. That original guest register? Still on display in our lobby.
Major renovation kept the soul but upgraded everything else. Added the west wing, installed modern plumbing that actually worked, and created what's now our signature restaurant space.
The Chen family acquired the property and started a careful restoration. They'd stayed here on their honeymoon decades earlier and couldn't let it fade into history. Smart cookies, those two.
Completed our most ambitious update yet - spa facilities, upgraded suites with the tech people actually want, and a rooftop terrace that's become the worst-kept secret in Vancouver. Heritage designation secured, future looking bright.
"We're not running a museum here - we're keeping history alive while making sure our guests have everything they need today."
Margaret & David Chen, Proprietors
Look, we're not gonna feed you some story about how this was always the dream. David was an architect, Margaret ran a consulting firm. We stayed here in 1989, just married, broke as hell but feeling fancy for a weekend.
Fast forward twenty-six years and the place was up for sale. Looking rough around the edges but still had that magic. We made what our accountant called "an emotionally-driven decision" and bought it anyway.
The restoration took three years. Turns out when you peel back vintage wallpaper, you find more vintage wallpaper, and sometimes some problems you weren't expecting. We kept the original moldings, restored those stained glass windows, and yes - we did have arguments about bathroom fixtures at 2am.
What we've built isn't just ours anymore. It belongs to everyone who walks through that door looking for something more than just a place to sleep. We've got regulars who come back every year, staff who've been here since day one, and a building that seems to know when it needs to show off.
Margaret handles the details (she'll notice if a picture frame is crooked from across the room). David obsesses over the architecture and makes sure we're not ruining anything important. Together, we're figuring it out as we go.
Our team's the reason people come back. Everyone here actually likes what they do, and honestly, it shows. We're not perfect, but we give a damn.
We've been doing this for a while now. Come see what a century of hospitality looks like when you bring it into today. Book direct and we'll make sure you're taken care of.
